North Sulawesi’s active volcanoes are part of the “ring of fire” running over the world. You will have a chance to visit some of these on the mainland, but also underwater you can find traces of the activity.
In the north, at a dive site called “Paradise jetty” there is hot water rising out of the seabed and the dive sites at the Bangka Archipelago show, that this is a relatively new reef, where the hard corals did not have a chance yet to grow.
The basalt rock underwater is completely covered with the most amazingly colored soft corals. Around the rocks, in the swirling waters, big schools of yellow snappers have the time of their life and the small crevices and big sponges offer a good hiding place for the many interesting critters.
It is nature at it’s best. The visibility is not always as good as in Bunaken National Park due to the sometimes crashing waves, but a visit to this area is something you don’t want to miss.
