Protect Yourself

Snorkelers are free to swim right out of our marina or join the boats for a tour on the outer reefs. Make sure you protect yourself well against the sun. Sunburns can develop quickly and unnoticed due to the cooling of the water.

The Current & Temperature

The current is light to moderate. At some sites the current can be unpredictable and come up or go down. If you don’t feel sure you can handle this, don’t be shy to ask for help. The water temperature ranges between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius (79-85 Fahrenheit). Most people are fine using a 3 mm shorty or full suit.

Triggerfish & Hydrozoan

There are no dangerous species in the area. Divers and snorkelers should only stay away from sandy patches with Trigger fish in the months May and June, when they are hatching and protecting their eggs.

Hydrozoans are pinkish, fernlike life forms on the reef. Contact with your skin can cause nasty burns due to nematocysts (stinging cells). Never rub the affected area, but wave a lot of seawater along the affected skin.

Once on the boat again, ask your guide for vinegar to neutralize the nematocysts and then hydrocortisone ointment to help heal the area.

In our dive shop we have the Bunaken National Park – Natural History Book. Here you can find a lot on interesting information about the underwater environment in the park as well as information about the local people and the nature on the surface.
